Chapter 52 Appointment
Chapter 52 Appointment
Although Hector had tried his best to calm his mind, Paris, who was still sleeping in the hibernation pod, continued to disturb his peace of mind.
The warriors on the ship could sense the heavy and troubled heart of the Father of Genetics. While they were saddened for Hector, they also felt a pang of jealousy.
"You can't abandon me, sir!"
A mortal general lost his composure during the meeting and shouted at Hector.
Apart from the company commander from Dalian, only a handful of ordinary generals were allowed to participate in this meeting.
But if given a choice, this general would probably rather feign illness and anger the Primarch than come here to receive this honor.
He was heartbroken over this.
"Karnah John." Hector silenced the disgruntled company commanders around him and called out the other man's name softly.
The mortal general from Terra, his face contorted with sorrow as if abandoned, softened with shame at Hector's infectious voice.
"My lord," he said, his voice trembling, glancing at his colleague beside him who was looking down at his fingers and the table, still filled with resentment.
In Kanah John's eyes, he felt as if he had been abandoned, cast away from the Primarch, and left behind this glorious expedition.
"I would rather die as a soldier on the battlefield, sir," Kana John concluded.
Hector did not avoid the mortal's final, desperate gaze; he met the man's eyes and shook his head firmly.
Kana John felt increasingly desperate.
"I trust you, Carnar," Hector said. "Of all the generals of the mortal auxiliary army, I consider you a friend. I acknowledge your noble character, your command abilities, and your contributions to the Great Expedition."
"This place is completely rotten. I need your wisdom and skills to reclaim it and make it a better place."
"Are you going to abandon me, sir, abandon me in some unknown corner?" Cana John's voice was filled with sorrow.
No matter how nice Hector's words were, he always thought Hector was just trying to comfort him.
"Watch your tone, mortal!" The Eighth Company Commander, Her Kavis, had a sinister and dangerous look in his eyes.
His armor was one of the very few that differed from the Legion's silver-red color scheme, with just the right touches of scarlet, resembling fresh blood that had just been splashed on.
He rubbed his fingertips together, looking at Cana John as if he were looking at a piece of livestock waiting to be butchered.
"Watch your words, Kaviz!" Hector snapped at Hel Kaviz.
His company commander had always looked down on ordinary mortals except for those from Astartes.
Whether it's a high-ranking general or a street gangster, as long as the other party isn't Astartes, Hel Kavis despises them from the bottom of his heart.
This is also reflected in their efficient killing and precise deterrence.
Hel Kavis had no intention of arguing with Hector; he apologized to Hector with utmost respect and fell silent once more.
Seeing Hel Kavis's attitude, Hector felt helpless, but he looked at Kana John with concern.
He swore that this was absolutely not his arrangement.
But the other party was not intimidated by Hel Kavis's threat. He always exuded a sense of despair as if he had been abandoned by the whole world, and stared at Hector with resentment.
This initially proved to be a challenge for Hector.
Hector then swept his gaze across the other mortal auxiliary army generals. As his gaze moved, those generals who had once looked at him with fervent adoration fell silent, even lowering their heads in extreme timidity.
Hector was at a loss for words, as if what he held in his hands was not a title that would bring glory to his family for a hundred, a thousand, or even ten thousand years, but a mission with no chance of survival.
Finally, Hector turned his gaze back to Kane John, his voice firm and authoritative: "The decision has been made, John."
"This is an order: you are to defend this mining planet for the Empire and conquer the nearby moons."
Holmes saw the predicament of the Father of Genetics, so he stepped forward and said to Cana John, "Cana John, you will become the governor of Planet 2-14, Iron Seven."
The world designated M-2535-B was once recaptured by the Second Expeditionary Fleet, becoming the fourteenth planet to be recaptured, hence its name change.
"This is an honor and a great privilege."
"Cannot be changed."
Holmes spoke the last four words aloud, conveying the final decision on behalf of his genetic father.
Hector nodded slightly to John Cana and said that this was his will, which determined his fate.
Cana John gave a wry smile, having no choice but to accept the honor and settle for becoming a planetary governor, enjoying the secondary tax exemption policy of the Legion's affiliated planets.
The Second Legion did not leave Astartes for him, but the mortal auxiliary troops left behind were more than enough to plow through all the nearby moons and planetary aliens several times over, making Kanah John a veritable local tyrant.
"Aren't you too soft-hearted and merciful towards mortals, my lord?" Holmes hesitated, but still managed to ask.
"I think so, my son." Hector did not deny it. "Kana John is an extremely capable general. He distinguished himself in the conquest of Sikamor and was no less capable than any chapter commander."
"I truly cannot bear to see him sent down here."
"But I also find it hard to trust the corrupt, arrogant, and stupid imperial bureaucrats."
"They may be loyal, but they're bound to mess everything up."
Hector somewhat missed his Minister of the Interior, Narcissus; if he were here, everything would be resolved most properly.
At the same time, he felt heavy-hearted because of the love and respect that Cana John and everyone here had for him.
In these years of conquest, the mortal generals and soldiers in the legion, as well as the Ripper Legion and several knight families, revered him more than the Emperor, who had been detached from the Second Expeditionary Fleet for too long.
The Ripper Legion, in particular, is a Tier 2 Titan legion of the Empire. Although it does not have Emperor-level Titans like the Trident Legion, it has a large number of Warrior-level Titans under its command.
Their supreme commander swore allegiance to Hector.
Their forging world, Sintira, is already the Second Legion's most reliable ally.
"They are too greedy, my lord," Holmes said, shaking his head.
"Greed? What makes you say that?" Hector asked in surprise.
"They actually dared to dream of serving you indefinitely; as mortals, that's absolutely impossible."
Upon hearing this, Hector frowned: "I didn't know you became someone who thinks like Hel Kavis."
"My lord, I am by no means a man like Hercule Carvis." Holmes was somewhat angry, but his tone remained humble.
