Chapter 130: Sweating profusely
"Are you the only one in the whole world who knows this?"
Lox's eye twitched slightly. He stared at Oro with a look that seemed to burn holes in the man's face: "You bastard, you actually did something like that!?"
Oro rolled his eyes, utterly exasperated. "Knowing doesn't mean I did it, understand?"
I read Oro back then at a book cafe called Sugar Plus Three Spoons. The novels in that book cafe, which violated the spirit of respecting the internet, contained all sorts of outrageous plots.
He didn't bother explaining to Lox, and instead continued with his findings: "It's an illusion, but not entirely an illusion."
Auro stomped his foot, his heel striking the black ground with a loud thud that echoed far and wide across the empty tower platform: "What's half-true and half-false is the most deceptive. I can be sure what you experienced was fake, so—what I experienced must have been real."
"Interesting, we might even run into one of those things."
Listening to Oro's explanation, Lox remained noncommittal: "What happened to you?"
"I met some unknown thing that was disguised as you. You clung to my leg the whole way, calling me 'godfather' and begging me not to leave you."
"You said you were thirsty halfway there, so I gave you a cup of good tea with three spoonfuls of sugar added, and you exploded after drinking it."
Menlox's face darkened: "Is that funny?"
"good."
As he spoke, Auro walked to the edge of the large platform in front of the tower's archway, crouched down, and looked down at the black water that had submerged the steps below.
All that could be seen were the slight ripples on the surface of the water; nothing could be seen beneath the surface.
Some flocculent material, resembling some kind of algae, was floating on the water's surface.
"You bastard, can't you live without saying something infuriating?!" Rocks followed.
"Alright, alright, stop fooling around."
Oro waved his hand: "It's still very dangerous now. Young people should be more sensible."
"I--"
Just as Lox was about to curse, Auro raised his hand to interrupt him: "Alright, let's get down to business."
Auro raised his hand and pointed to the enormous, writhing aggregate hanging in the distance above the twisted city.
The outline of the thing appeared and disappeared in the gray-blue light, and its surface was covered with countless tiny bumps that undulated, as if something was crawling inside.
"The Valley of the Gods is real, so this tower is real, and the ground beneath our feet is real too."
"So—that thing is fake."
Rocks also looked up.
Are you sure?
He stared at the enormous, writhing, grotesque thing, a sight that sent chills down his spine: "What if I misjudged this thing—"
Oro withdrew his hand: "I'm sure."
He stood up and patted his trouser leg: "This thing was also stolen from me."
"Believe me, if this thing were real, we would have died long ago and wouldn't have made it this far."
Lox stared at the aggregate for a few seconds, then looked away: "Alright, so what should we do now?"
He looked around. The city of the abyss was too large. As far as the eye could see, there were twisted buildings that stretched densely into the depths of darkness.
"With so many buildings, are we supposed to search them one by one?"
"Of course not."
Oro looked down at the Blackwater Sea below the steps once more, his golden pupils shining like two bright golden lamps in the dim light.
"Lox, I'm asking you something."
Oro suddenly asked Lox, "If you were the only thing that could move in this city, where would you hide the other half of the demon contract?"
Lox noticed that Oro was tilting his head, as if examining something in the water.
"If there are no other objective conditions, I only have one answer."
Locke followed Oro's gaze into the water, but he saw nothing; the surface was calm, with only slight ripples.
"Carry it with you at all times."
"That's true."
Oro nodded, the golden light in his eyes growing brighter: "If you're confident, of course it's safest to carry it with you at all times."
The golden light in Oro's eyes grew brighter and brighter: "Do you know?"
"The human eye sees an object by the light it produces or the light it reflects."
Auro's inexplicable words instantly tensed Rocks, his three types of Haki circulating within him, ready for battle at any moment.
Although he was puzzled, he knew that this young man was quick-witted and must have his reasons for speaking and acting.
Oro didn't look at him, still staring at the black water.
"If you are hidden in a darkness that has no light and does not reflect light, you will not be able to see anything in the darkness."
He raised his hand and pointed to his glowing golden eyes.
"But, I'm sorry."
Auro's lips curled into a smile, a smile tinged with the excitement of spotting prey: "My eyes light up on their own~ Hehe, I see you."
Oro hadn't finished speaking.
Rocks had already launched an attack!
A dark red, domineering lightning bolt suddenly exploded!
Black flames coiled around his right arm, and he used his hand as a blade to unleash a relentless Conqueror's Haki slash at the black water area that Oro was staring at!
boom-!!!
The explosive Conqueror's Haki cleaved through the black water, sending up a spray of water hundreds of meters high!
The black liquid spread out in the air, like a rain of ink.
Auro manipulated the gold to extend into an arc-shaped barrier, blocking the black droplets that were falling on himself and Rocks.
A deeper darkness was revealed beneath the split black water.
But this time, even Lox saw a strangely shaped black shadow darting out from the center of his attack.
The thing was incredibly fast. It burst out of the water, left a blurry trail in the air, and then plunged into the twisted buildings ahead, disappearing from sight.
The whole process took less than half a second.
"Should we chase after them?"
Although Rocks shouted it as a question, his knees were already slightly bent and he was ready to take off with a single step.
His eyes were fixed on the direction where the thing disappeared, and his Conqueror's Haki was still flowing over his body, ready to launch a second attack at any moment.
"I just said this place likes to create half-real, half-illusion illusions, and you've already forgotten?"
Oro's words caught Lox off guard, and he stumbled and almost fell.
Lox looked at Oro, his face full of confusion: "Huh?"
Auro slowly turned around.
He didn't look in the direction the object had disappeared. Instead, he extended his right hand behind Locke, palm open, and politely asked, "Could you please return the gold dust to me?"
Oro's voice echoed across the empty platform: "It's only a few grams, but I have so many people working for me, I have to be frugal."
Now Rocks was genuinely sweating.
Because even now, he still hasn't felt anything!
