Chapter 27: The Assassin's Role Completed
Chapter 27: The Assassin's Role Completed
After leaving the "House of Divination," Altair began to ponder the answer he had just received: "Was I too hesitant in my actions...?"
Seeing that Altair had been acting strangely ever since they came out of the "Fortune Teller's House," Vera thought for a moment with her not-so-bright little brain and then simply pressed her head against Altair's shoulder.
Sensing Vera's movements, Altair turned to look and found that Vera was like a kitten seeking comfort.
Seeing her movements, Altair asked curiously, "Who taught you this? You're acting like a poor little kitten."
Upon hearing Altair's words, Vera, having regained her composure, immediately said, "Those old aunties taught me that if you want a good life in the future, you have to be able to provide emotional value. The people who buy us love cute people the most, and doing so allows us to better demonstrate our worth."
"And back then, they taught us that if we didn't study hard, they wouldn't give us food, and so on..."
Listening to Vera's complaints, Altair could only helplessly pat her head. To his surprise, Vera's behavior when he patted her head was just like a cat's.
He turned to look at Eileen, wondering if she would do the same. After all, it was exciting to think about a cool and aloof older woman suddenly making such a move.
When Eileen saw Altair looking at her, and then at Vera, she sat down next to Altair.
..........
Upon returning home, Altair immediately stated that he had already eaten dinner and did not need to prepare his own.
After changing my clothes back in my room, I went straight to the study and picked up a novel to pass the time.
When I got halfway through the book, I realized that the story had deviated significantly from the original plot and turned from a detective novel into a romance novel, so I immediately lost interest.
I can't help but think to myself, "It seems that romance novels will always find a market, no matter what world you're in."
I put down the book in my hand and turned to look out the window. The red moon, even after looking at it for more than two months, still doesn't look right.
Sleep, sleep. Nothing is more important than my warm bed right now.
Altair yawned as he entered the washroom. After a quick wash, he lay down in his soft bed.
.........
The next morning, after Altair finished breakfast, Hahn came in to report on yesterday's events: "Freya Quinn, my housekeeper, her father died but the debts weren't settled. Originally, after his death, the 'villa' was sold to clear the debts on the spot, but who knew that someone else would suddenly jump out and demand that Freya Quinn repay the debt."
Altair looked at the bizarre note in front of him and asked curiously.
"Hahn, I remember there's a law in the Kingdom of Rune that says you can refuse to inherit a private debt if the heirs are unaware of it. And this is a debt of 100 pounds, so why are they now demanding 500 pounds?"
"And this IOU is just a piece of paper, not even a formal document. There's no seal on it, so we don't even know if it's forged. Is such an IOU even valid?"
Hearing Altair's words, Hahn helplessly replied, "After you went out yesterday, I specifically asked Freya for information, and it is indeed the case."
"Freya originally wanted to get an advance on a sum of money, but she felt the amount was a bit too large, so she didn't ask you for it."
After hearing this, Altair remembered Freya Quinn's weekly wage: £5 per week, which meant he needed to advance nearly two years' worth of wages.
It would be embarrassing for anyone to ask for such a large sum of money in advance.
But since he wasn't short of money, he said directly, "Hahn, 500 pounds isn't a lot of money. If Freya Quinn needs it, we can just give her an advance. But I have a feeling there's something wrong with this IOU. Have a private investigator look into it and see what's going on."
After taking the IOU from Altair, Hahn said helplessly, "I also find this matter very strange. I had investigated her family's situation before. It's impossible for a bank to lend money to her family, and they've already borrowed from all the private lenders they could. Moreover, this IOU is for a loan from a well-known gang in the East District, but there shouldn't be so much interest."
.......
Watching Hahn leave, Altair was speechless at the whole thing. How could someone actually believe that a debt was owed when there was nothing on the IOU?
.......
While casually flipping through the documents Hahn brought in, Altair also saw some news that piqued his interest.
The Royal Family of Ruen is preparing to begin their "Summer Hunt" at the end of this month. Of course, this news cannot be made public; it is a document sent by the Royal Family specifically to the nobles.
All barons and nobles of the rank of Baron in Backlund are required to participate. The documents are being issued now to verify the identities of the participants. Special identification will be required to enter, and those without it will be considered assassins.
If you want to bring someone along, you must ensure that they have a certain social standing and act as a guarantor, and you must also undergo a rigorous review process, among other stringent conditions.
It can be said that those who can participate are either nobles or celebrities with a certain degree of fame.
They hunt around July, undeterred by the sweltering summer heat.
It seems I need to specifically practice my horseback riding skills, as I've never learned them before.
.........
June 17, 1346, evening
Altair watched as the life force of the person before him rapidly faded away, and he himself felt as if his own shackles had been broken, and his body felt relaxed and comfortable.
In the past ten days, Altair, using information gathered by Hahn, has carried out two more assassinations, the first in the dock area and the second now. Each time, at least five people have died at his hands.
After completing this assassination, I clearly felt that my 'Assassin' potion had been completely digested.
Altair's mood reached an unprecedented peak at this moment. After nearly two months of hard work, he finally digested the Sequence Nine potion.
Thinking to myself, "I'll make a Sequence 8 potion tomorrow to prepare for my advancement. There's no point in staying here at the reception."
Klein digested the potions from the Diviner's Path in a month, while I digested the potions from four different paths in two months. Although I only need to play one type of role, the overall quantity won't decrease. In that sense, I'm quite a little genius!
Maybe I'll become a demigod in three years, then I can really have some fun.
However, how to process "pleasure" is indeed a challenge for me. Although I am not affected by Chick, am I supposed to be a person who enjoys "pleasure," a concept that is obviously related to emotions?
