“The photos might not be very accurate, makeup techniques are amazing these days,” Shirakawa Natsumi added. “But she walks with a bouncy gait, speaks loudly, and looks very energetic.”
"Hmph." The old man put down the photo; his weathered face was etched with wrinkles of time, but his smile was kind.
"You're saying this because she's your girlfriend, right? It's making me angry, you old man..."
"Um, I'll go take a look over there." Shirakawa Natsu coughed twice, took the photos, said goodbye, and turned around.
Just then, two children ran up from a distance and greeted him from afar: "Hi, big brother, haven't you found your sister yet?"
“Hmm.” Shirakawa Natsu looked at the photo. Nao was making a V-sign at the camera; it was one of the few photos of her.
In the photo, her eyes shine as she looks at the camera.
That photo was taken shortly after they met, when Nao took the initiative to express her feelings for him.
Shirakawa Natsu suddenly realized that from that moment on, Nao's gaze towards him had already been filled with unreserved affection.
Her love has always been open, honest, and pure, without any calculation or scheming involved.
"Here you go." The little girl held out her cute little hand and stuffed a candy into Shirakawa Natsu's palm: "Good luck, big brother."
She made a cheering gesture with her hand, then pulled the little boy next to her and skipped away.
Miyu walked over from a distance, her hands in her pockets.
Her hair had grown longer than before, from ear-length to earlobe length, but it still lacked feminine softness; instead, it had gained a more unruly and rebellious air.
"You've already asked that old man, haven't you? We've been here for three months now."
“Yes, his memory isn’t very good; he has a bit of dementia, so every time I ask him something, he always has something new to say.” Shirakawa Natsu put away the photo in her hand, looking at the old man. He was sitting on a wooden chair, basking in the sun, holding a white cotton candy his grandson had given him. The morning sunlight shone on his face, reflecting his kind smile.
"He seems to think that country still exists, and he often talks about the past. Now, the only people I can find who might be related to Nao are those few old people."
"Hmm." Miyuki nodded. "We've searched the entire birch forest nearby. Are there any other clues?"
"Let me think." Shirakawa Natsu tilted his head back. Over the past three months, he had replayed the moments he had spent with Nao in his mind countless times:
“She said she would bring me to the place where she was born, where there is a birch tree with her name carved on it. She said she would tell me her real name and then carve my name next to it.”
"Is carving words on a tree considered uncivilized behavior?" Mikoto suddenly asked.
"Uh, that depends on what kind of tree it is." Shirakawa Natsumi's lips twitched. It was rather strange that his good brother was being so attentive.
“Let’s go look in the birch forest. Maybe we can find a tree with her name carved on it,” Mikoto suggested. She had been staying with Shirakawa Natsu for three months without getting tired of it and seemed to be enjoying this vacation-like time.
“Your suggestion is quite romantic.” Shirakawa Natsu’s expression was strange: “Putting aside how many birch trees there are outside Moscow, even if I find the one with her name engraved on it, I still don’t know her real name.”
He paused abruptly at this point.
Yes.
He never asked Nao's name and knew nothing about her past.
at this time.
The old man stood up from the wooden chair, took the hands of the two children, and said with a smile, "Come on, let's go to the birch forest in the west of the city. There used to be a big wall there, and no one was allowed to enter. Later, no one lived there, and the wall collapsed."
"Grandpa, the birch forest in the west of the city was cut down last year," the granddaughter reminded him. She laughed and added, "Grandpa, this is the tenth time you've repeated this."
Shirakawa Natsu stared blankly at the old man, then turned to Miyuki and said, "Let's go to the west of the city."
Miyuki nodded, unlocked a small electric scooter parked by the roadside with her key, and got on. Shirakawa Natsu sat behind her, holding her waist.
This is their car.
I rode my scooter for three months, exploring every street and alley, and visiting all the birch forests around Moscow.
Although the size of the scooter makes riding it not exactly cool.
But the fact that both of them were handsome, and in two different styles at that, made passersby turn their heads frequently.
Many roadside shops gave them friendly smiles.
Because Shirakawa Natsu had visited these suburban shops many times over the past three months, she had become familiar with most of the people there.
The little lamb drove through the city and stopped in the northern suburbs.
Shirakawa Natsu got off the car, took off her helmet, and saw a construction site under construction.
He didn't know why he wanted to come.
My behavior seems very strange no matter how you look at it.
But people are always like this; it's like seeing a tiny firefly's light flash in the distance in complete darkness, and wanting to go and take a look, even knowing that they will find nothing.
Miyu walked over: "This area was thought to be a military zone, but that was before the disintegration. Now they plan to develop it into a shopping mall."
"It's a military zone?" Shirakawa Natsu was taken aback.
“Back then, you could find military zones anywhere around Moscow, big or small, even in deserted places.” Miyuki took out a cigarette and lit it. The wind blew by, lifting the ends of her hair.
“That’s true.” Shirakawa Natsu nodded, looking at the excavator workers who were working enthusiastically.
Even if this really is a place where Nao once stayed, it doesn't matter.
"Why did I have to come here?" Shirakawa Natsu murmured softly.
He traveled to a foreign country for three months just because of a casual promise he made in his memory.
"Because you love her." Miyuki turned her head: "Love is not a product of reason, marriage is."
“That’s true.” Shirakawa Natsu nodded, not too disappointed, as she hadn’t had high hopes to begin with.
"Do you want to go back?" Miyuki asked.
“No.” Shirakawa Natsu shook her head: “I don’t know why I want to stay here to look for her, but I know that right now I just want to stay here. Of course, I might change my mind tomorrow, but right now, I’m sure I’ll regret it if I go back.”
"Hmph." Miyuki chuckled and stubbed out his cigarette.
"You didn't even inhale, so why did you stop?" Shirakawa Natsu pouted. "What a waste. We don't have enough funds right now. I'm thinking about whether I should draw comics here to make some money."
"Do you love her?" Mikoto suddenly asked.
“Of course, I love her.” Shirakawa Natsu smiled, his tone certain. This trip to Moscow had confirmed his feelings.
He truly loves Nao. From the moment she confessed her feelings for him until now, he is certain that he has unknowingly fallen in love with this girl.
"Then go ahead and shout," Mikoto laughed. "They say love can work miracles, why don't you give it a try?"
Chapter 464 I Still Remember
It was a bit chilly outside Moscow in autumn. After a birch forest was cleared away, workers were busily building a shopping mall on the cleared land.
There were some sparse trees around, which obstructed the view, and the wind made a "rustling" sound when it blew through the leaves.
As Shirakawa Natsu stepped onto the grass, she recalled her first encounter with Nao, which also took place in autumn.
The two often went on dates together at school.
Of course, it was mainly because Nao was clinging to him, and he had many memories of the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves.
"Shout here?" Shirakawa Natsumi looked at Miyuki with suspicion, his heart pounding. A certain possibility flashed through his mind:
"Can you smell her scent?"
Shirakawa Natsu turned her head to look around, hoping to find that pretty figure among the sparse trees.
“No.” Mikoto shook his head, his expression playful. “You came here hoping for a miracle, didn’t you? Then tell this land that you love her.”
Shirakawa Natsu was taken aback, then nodded sadly.
When she first met Nao, she immediately expressed her goodwill towards her.
He had gotten used to Nao's sacrifices for him and took everything for granted, and had never properly told her that he loved her.
Shirakawa Natsu didn't know if the ground beneath his feet was the birch forest that Nao wanted to come to with him.
Take a deep breath.
He closed his eyes, mustered all his strength, and his voice strained out from his throat: "Nao! I love you!!!"
The last sound was a little distorted.
A feeling of relief welled up inside me; I had finally said what I should have told Nao a long time ago.
In that environment, I spoke out.
The things that had been bottled up inside him for the past three months were all released at this moment with his shouts.
The sound traveled far through the woods.
Shirakawa Natsu opened her eyes and looked around nervously.
The only sound in the woods was the wind rustling through the leaves.
The workers on the construction site were working hard, just like before.
"Hehe." Shirakawa Natsu chuckled awkwardly. He admitted that for a moment just now, he had some unrealistic fantasies.
He looked up, wanting to call Miyuki home.
A tall figure suddenly emerged from the woods, hands in pockets, a cigarette dangling from his mouth.
"Excuse me, do you need me to leave for a moment?" Miyuki held a cigarette between two fingers, her eyes mocking. "You'll feel better if you vent your frustrations by yourself."
"Mi no Kumi! Alone? Holy crap?!" Shirakawa Natsu suddenly turned around and looked around, but there was nothing there.
The figure of Miyuki from before was nowhere to be seen.
He looked around blankly.
Did I hallucinate because I missed Nao so much?
"What's wrong?" Miyu walked over: "I went over there and asked the workers. This used to be a military zone, but now it's been converted into..."
"The shopping mall?" Shirakawa Natsumi asked.
"Hmm?" A look of surprise flashed in Miyuki's eyes: "You already know?"
"Slap!" Shirakawa Natsumi slapped himself hard across the face. A crisp sound followed by a sharp pain. It wasn't an illusion.
Even if it's a hallucination, it couldn't be Miyuki.
And then there was the action of lighting a cigarette, taking a single puff, and then putting it out.
"I'm going after Nao!" Shirakawa Natsu turned and shouted to Miyuki before running towards the spot where Nao had been standing and rushing into the forest.
He ran frantically, shouting as he went, hoping to find that familiar figure in the forest.
He had waited three months for this moment.
"Nao?" Miyuki looked around, sniffing the air. She frowned slightly, looked to the right, then to the left where Shirakawa Natsu had already disappeared from sight.
She tilted her head, considering whether to tell him that he had run in the wrong direction.
Miyuki leaned against a tree trunk and took a deep drag. Then, a smile played on his lips as he stubbed out his cigarette and slowly walked toward the direction Shirakawa Natsu had run off in.
Shirakawa Natsu didn't know how long she ran until night fell, when only the moon provided a faint light.
He stopped and realized that he had unknowingly run into the forest.
All around was quiet; there were no insects chirping in autumn, only the cool evening breeze.
"Oh, I'm really going crazy."
Shirakawa Natsu squatted down, took out her phone, and opened the navigation. The signal was poor; she was now a full twenty kilometers away from Moscow.
"What am I doing?"
Every time he calmed down, he felt pretty stupid.
He straightened up, wanting to go back to find Miyuki.
My legs suddenly went weak, and I ended up squatting down on the ground.
Below is grass and soil, it's a bit cool, so don't worry about getting hurt.
Shirakawa Natsu then realized that after the long run, her body was already exhausted, but she had been holding on to her breath and had not stopped.
I stopped for a short while, and my physical fatigue immediately showed.
"never mind!"
Shirakawa Natsu lay back on the ground, stretched out her hand, and looked at the moon through her fingers.
He knew that Nao didn't want to see him.
