Chapter 10 A New Commission
Chapter 10 A New Commission
"The people from the Twilight Church's Inquisition?"
Rean sat up slightly and said with interest, "I didn't expect it to be someone from the church who contacted me. That's quite rare."
"However, I must say, Mr. Seth, you have successfully piqued my curiosity. If you can provide sufficient compensation, I can accept your commission."
Twilight Church is the church with the largest number of believers in the Kingdom of Bernard.
The Fletcher family are devout believers in this church, which, like the other three churches, is an orthodox church officially recognized by various countries.
The Tribunal, on the other hand, is the internal adjudicating body of the Twilight Church.
Their primary profession is to deal with and eliminate heretics who dare to blaspheme against God!
Demons and witches are feared by everyone in this world, and some cultists belong to the category of heretics.
Therefore, the intention of this member of the court who approached Rean to issue the hope Yao commission is self-evident.
"The reward for this mission is 100 pounds."
Seth sat down again and smiled. "I think this price should be enough to satisfy you, Mr. Rean."
"That's a good price. It seems the church is in trouble."
Rean smiled and said, "However, according to the rules, you have to pay a quarter of the deposit first."
Upon hearing this, Seth showed no intention of haggling. He took out a wad of banknotes bearing the name of Hawthorne I from his inner jacket pocket and handed them over directly.
"This is a deposit of 25 pounds. The remaining balance will be settled in full after you, Mr. Rean, have completed your commission."
Clearly, he was well-prepared and understood the rules of the detective profession.
Rean took the stack of banknotes, which smelled of ink, glanced at them with a smile, and then put them in his pocket.
"Mr. Seth, tell me, what do you want me to do?"
Seth's expression turned slightly serious: "We need your help to find someone!"
"What kind of person? Is there a portrait?"
"No, as for what kind of person they are... we don't really know either."
"You don't know anything?"
Rean couldn't help but find it amusing. "Mr. Seth, I must remind you, I'm a detective, not a wish-granting machine from a fairy tale."
Seth didn't reply, but just glanced at old Henry, who was pretending to be a wooden figure.
The latter immediately understood, got up and left the private room, thoughtfully closing the door behind him.
Only after old Henry's footsteps had completely faded into the distance did Seth look at Rean, his expression serious, and say:
"Mr. Rean, have you heard about the disappearances that happened in the South District?"
Rean thought for a moment: "...The incident ten years ago? I remember there were more than forty people who went missing within a month?"
"That's right, it's this case!"
Seth nodded, his tone grave. "Our investigation has revealed that it wasn't a gang as rumored, but rather the work of a single person."
"Later, we found the bodies of the missing people one after another, but these bodies were all just mutilated corpses, with their internal organs and some organs missing."
"It sounds like the work of cultists or the devil."
Rean said thoughtfully, "So your request is for me to find this 'person'?"
"Although I'm very interested in this, it happened ten years ago, which is too long..."
"Not ten years ago."
Seth looked intently at Rean. "That person has reappeared recently!"
"Oh? Recently?"
Rean raised an eyebrow. "So, you've found another corpse with the same marks? And a fresh one at that?"
"Yes! Just three days ago, a patrol officer found a body in Rat Tail Alley in the South District. Because the death was so gruesome, he notified us."
Seth patiently explained, "Afterwards, through repeated comparisons, we discovered that the manner of death of this body was extremely similar to that of the incident ten years ago."
"Of course, as you said, due to the long time span, we could not directly confirm it at the time, and we cannot rule out the possibility that copycats were trying to mislead the public."
He paused, then continued with a solemn expression:
"It wasn't until we discovered two more bodies... that it was finally confirmed that the killer had returned!"
A single similar corpse might be a coincidence, but three similar corpses in a row could only be the result of deliberate manipulation.
Now, regardless of whether this person is the original or a copycat, such a heinous and bloody incident is intolerable to the Twilight Church.
Rean pondered for a moment, "Do you have any other information? I need more clues."
"I'm sorry," Seth said helplessly, "aside from knowing that this killer prefers to act at night, we have no other leads."
"What about extraordinary abilities? I remember that not all members of your Inquisition are extraordinary individuals?"
"I've tried it too..."
Seth looked bitter. "The tracking abilities are almost useless, and the divination methods are severely disrupted, unable to provide any guidance."
"Therefore, we suspect that the other party is most likely carrying some kind of supernatural item."
Upon hearing this, Rean frowned slightly.
At that moment, he finally understood why the people from the court had come to him.
This was clearly a last resort; they could no longer rely on supernatural abilities to solve the problem, so they had no choice but to pass the buck to a traditional detective like him.
Seeing Rean remain silent, Seth assumed he was in a difficult position and quickly spoke up:
"Mr. Rean, we don't need you to capture this person. As long as you can provide some valuable clues, we can consider this a fulfillment of the commission."
"Not only that, we can also help clear your name in that case."
"Help me clear my name? Looks like your investigation into me is quite thorough."
After making a joke, Rean looked at Seth, who was about to explain, and casually waved his hand, "Don't worry, Mr. Seth. Since I've accepted the deposit, it means I've accepted this commission. You don't need to worry about me going back on my word."
"All you need to tell me is the deadline for this commission, and the meeting place after we find a clue."
"Seven days! Only seven days!"
Seth quickly explained, "Mr. Rean, please understand, I know time is short, but Bishop Austin..."
"I've already said, Mr. Seth, you don't need to say so much, I don't care about these things."
Before he could finish speaking, Rean interrupted him, "Please don't waste time on these meaningless words, just get to the point."
"Where is the location?"
"It's still here. You just need to contact old Henry, and he'll let me know."
This time, Seth didn't offer any further explanations and answered honestly.
"I see."
Rean nodded, stood up, and picked up his top hat. "Is there anything else, Mr. Hunter of the Inquisition?"
"No...that's all."
Perhaps because it was the first time Seth had met a detective like Rean who didn't argue with his employer, he looked somewhat bewildered.
"Since that's all, I'll take my leave now. Sweet dreams."
Rean gave a slight bow, then turned and walked out of the private room.
